Modern silicone and through-coloured render that stands up to Devon's wet, coastal weather, from full house renders to repairs. Free quotes by WhatsApp.
Render has two jobs. Keep the weather out of the wall, and make the house look right.
Devon is hard on the outside of a house. Driving rain half the year, salt air anywhere near the coast, and that long mild damp that turns north-facing walls green. The render is what sits between all of that and your brickwork, so the system matters. We work mainly with modern silicone renders, including K-Rend silicone systems. They shed water, they let the wall breathe, and they don't crack and stain the way old sand-and-cement render does.
Silicone render is also through-coloured. The colour runs the full depth of the coat instead of sitting on top as paint, so there's nothing to repaint every few years and nothing to fade patchily where the weather gets at it. Plenty of shades to choose from too. Full house, one elevation or a repair, the job underneath is the same: get the prep right and the finish takes care of itself.
Modern and traditional rendering, done properly.
Thin-coat silicone that sheds the rain and never wants repainting.
Colour all the way through. No repainting, no patchy fading, a wide range of shades.
Application of K-Rend silicone renders and finishes, applied to spec on the right backing coats. See our K-Rend page.
Cracked, blown or stained render patched and made good so it blends with the rest.
Render finishes applied over external wall insulation for warmth and weatherproofing.
Fresh render on new-builds, extensions and garden rooms, taken from bare block to finished.
Blown render off, new render on. Drag the sliders to compare.

The old render on this one was blown all over. Hollow when you tapped it, water sitting in behind. It all came off. Primed, scratch coat, then top coated with EcoRend OCR in a Terraline scraped finish. Through-coloured, so it never needs painting.

The sand and cement on this gable had blown and was coming away in slabs, you can see the pile of it on the sheets in the before shot. Everything came off, back to the blockwork. Primed, scratch coat, then a Terraline top coat picked to sit right against the rest of the bungalow, so the new gable doesn't shout about being new. That's the third photo: new render meeting the old, and you'd walk past it.
In a county this wet you're fighting two things. Rain getting into the wall, and the green algae that creeps across anything that stays damp. Silicone render is water-repellent, so rain beads up and runs off instead of soaking in. It's breathable as well, and that combination is the point on older and exposed Devon walls: water off the surface, but anything already in the wall can still get out.
It holds its colour and mostly keeps itself clean. One thing worth knowing though: render is fussy about the weather it goes on in. Too cold, too hot, or rain in the first couple of days and the cure suffers, so we plan jobs around the forecast rather than the diary. Sometimes that means waiting a few days for a window. Better that than a finish that fails in year two.
We cover all aspects of plastering and rendering, right across Devon.
Rendering is priced by the square metre, but the metre rate isn't the whole story.
Silicone and K-Rend cost more per m² than traditional sand and cement, but never need painting. Lime is dearer again, and the only option on old walls.
On anything above single storey you're paying for scaffold. It's often one of the biggest line items on a render quote.
Rendering over sound existing render is one job. Hacking a house back to brick first is a completely different one.
A detached house with a driveway is straightforward. A terrace with no side access and a narrow lane is not.
Bell casts, beading, window reveals, quoins and sills all take time and skill. A plain elevation is quicker than a fussy one.
Obvious, but it's measured in square metres of wall, not bedrooms. A long bungalow can have more wall than a narrow three-storey.
We quote fixed prices after a proper look. No day rates, no surprises halfway through. Send a photo of the property and we'll tell you what's involved.
Silicone, monocouche or traditional sand and cement. They behave very differently over twenty years. We've set out the full comparison here, including what each costs and which walls they suit.
It works for penetrating damp, but on an old solid wall the wrong render can cause damp that wasn't there before. Read this first: will rendering stop damp?
What rendering a house involves covers the questions we get asked most, rendering over existing render or pebbledash, planning permission, how long it takes, working in winter, and picking a colour you will still like in ten years. Near the sea? Salt air is brutal on render, so read rendering a house on the Devon coast before you choose a system.
There's a newer option most Devon renderers aren't offering yet. Cork render sprays straight over pebbledash without stripping it, insulates the wall as it goes on, and unlike silicone or cement it's breathable, so it's safe on old cob and stone.
