Render doesn't fail all at once

It cracks, it blows, it lets water in behind, and the sooner it's patched, the smaller the job.

Render on Devon homes takes a beating: driving rain off the coast, frost getting into hairline cracks, and movement in older walls underneath. The usual signs are cracks spreading from corners and openings, patches that sound hollow when tapped, chunks coming away around cills and reveals, and staining where water is getting in behind. Left alone, water works in behind the render, frost does the rest, and a small patch becomes a whole elevation.

We repair rendered walls across Exeter and Devon: raking out and filling cracks properly, cutting out blown areas back to sound material and re-rendering them, and rebuilding damaged corners, beads and reveals. And when a patch won't do, we'll say so rather than take the job twice.

What our render repairs cover

From a hairline crack to a blown elevation.

Cracked render

Cracks raked out, filled and finished so water and frost can't get in behind and spread them.

Blown & hollow patches

Areas that have lost their key cut out back to sound render and patched in properly.

Corners, beads & reveals

Damaged corners, stop beads and window reveals rebuilt sharp and true.

Pebbledash patching

Damaged dash patched and matched as closely as the original aggregate allows.

Water ingress damage

Render damaged by leaking gutters and failed seals repaired once the source is fixed.

Re-render advice

When a wall is past patching, we'll say so, and quote properly for re-rendering it.

The honest bit about patch-matching

A patch in painted sand-and-cement render can be blended in and painted over so it disappears. Through-coloured silicone systems like K-Rend are a different story: the colour is in the render itself, and weathering means a patch will rarely be a perfect match. Sometimes the right answer is a repair you can live with; sometimes it's re-coating the elevation. We'll show you the options and give you a straight answer rather than promising an invisible patch that won't be.

If your render is cracking repeatedly in the same places, the cause is usually movement or water, not the render, and that's worth understanding before spending money on repairs. Our guide to render and damp covers what render can and can't do.

Render repair questions

Can you patch K-Rend or coloured render?
Yes, but we'll be straight with you: through-coloured render weathers, so a new patch rarely matches perfectly. Where the match matters, re-coating the whole elevation is sometimes the better answer. We'll show you both options and price both.
Why does render crack?
The usual culprits are movement in the wall behind, frost getting into small cracks and opening them up, water ingress from failed gutters or seals, or render that was applied too strong for the wall underneath. The repair only lasts if the cause is dealt with, which is why we look before we quote.
Is cracked render urgent?
Small cracks aren't an emergency, but they're how bigger problems start: water gets in behind, frost expands it, and the render blows. Repairing cracks early is the cheap version of this job.
Do you repair pebbledash?
Yes. Damaged dash can be patched and matched as closely as the original aggregate allows. An exact match on weathered dash is difficult, and we'll show you what's realistic before starting.
